In a recent CBS5-KPIX-TV story about the granting of a long-delayed doctorate for a Lafayette-based educator, Biology Professor Sonya Schuh is quoted about the importance of supporting women in STEM. The KPIX story chronicles the journey of Cheryl Sundari Dembe, whose scientific research at the University of Chicago was interrupted in 1971 when her PhD advisor died, and she was rebuffed for being female by other male professors. Inspired by the #metoo movement, Dembe collected her research and sent it to the U of C, which recognized an institutional failure and awarded Dembe her PhD nearly 50 years later.
