Description/Abstract
The article reports on the history of sports and playing fields in Oakland, California during the frontier era. Details are given describing the social conditions of Oakland and the Bay Area region during the early and mid 1800s, highlighting the economic success of the region and its resulting popular entertainments. Several examples of ethnically driven and sponsored events such as Scottish ethnic Caledonian Games and Irish baseball are described.
