Description/Abstract
This past summer Saint Mary’s Biology Professor Jim Pesavento participated in the Berkeley Lab Undergraduate Faculty Fellowship (BLUFF) program. BLUFF brings visiting faculty to the prestigious Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for an extended period to work with LBNL investigators on their individual research interests. It also allows visiting professors to mentor their undergradute students in the renown science facility. Pesavento brought two of his students to the lab; Jada Walker ’18 and recent graduate Jack Clemensen ’17, who is now at Case Western University in their Masters in Bioethics program. Pesavento worked in collaboration with UC Professor Gary Karpen in the Biological Systems & Engineering Division at Berkeley Lab. The SMC biology professor's research includes the genetic investigation of green microalgae and their ability to sequester carbon dioxide as biomass to produce biofuel, a sustainable energy product.
